Municipality of Houten and Altera sign letter of intent for transformation of Het Rond shopping centre

Real estate investor Altera Vastgoed (Altera) signed a letter of intent with the Municipality of Houten today, on the second day of PROVADA, which will facilitate the redevelopment of the

Het Rond

shopping centre in Houten.

Het Rond

is Houten’s prime shopping area and features a food hall (de Vershof) and a diverse range of non-food outlets in addition to three full-service supermarkets. The range of shops includes a good mix of local businesses and retail chains.

Altera and the Municipality believe that the area comprising

Het Rond

in Houten is currently underutilised. With the letter of intent, the parties seek to collectively explore strategies for area optimisation. Following exploratory talks on the transformation of the area, the expressed aim is to reduce the retail space in the northern part of the zone and replace it with housing, making the centre more compact and better suited to future user demand.

Altera CIO Erwin Wessels:

Through our joint endorsement in the letter of intent, we emphasise the importance of transforming the area. Various principles and agreements are outlined in the letter of intent. Following an extensive preparation phase, which is typical in transformation endeavours, this letter of intent provides Altera with assurance that the parties are committed to working together in transforming the central area.

Houten Municipal Executive Member Rosa Molenaar:

The timing of the letter of intent perfectly aligns with our area vision for the Centrum, De Molenzoom and De Koppeling district, which also includes the shopping area and which we are currently developing. The shift from retail to residential focus in the area requires an upgrade in the quality of the public space, which aligns with the increased housing capacity.
